Overview

The Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa is a masterful integration of architecture and nature near Methven, close to the base of Ōpuke (Mt Hutt).

A gabion-walled entrance leads to interiors where the roof's LVL beams and cedar cladding mimic the surrounding mountains, guiding visitors through to the spa areas.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design, from the use of locally sourced materials like reclaimed timber to innovative heating solutions powered by the country's largest solar thermal system. The project's architectural design not only respects the environment but enhances visitors' spa experience.

To maintain this vision of natural harmony, it was key for a specialist team of intumescent experts, like Fireshield, to get involved and determine the best solution.

Our Involvement

Fireshield had two objectives with this project. The first was to make sure the linings were treated with the appropriate solution that met its unique needs. Being a thermal pool spa, the re-claimed timber would be exposed to intermittent moisture, as well as moisture from the visitors themselves. To ensure the right amount of protection was provided, we needed to recommend a highly robust solution.

However, our other objective was to ensure our solution did not impede on the natural beauty of the structure’s reclaimed timber linings.

We then recommended Fireshield TimberClear 1FR + Top Coat (Matt). This choice not only provided a Group 1S surface finish but also enhanced the spa’s architectural design.

During the construction phase, it was realised that the timber couldn’t be coated on-site due to the amount of other trades working on the build and the risk of poor quality control. Fireshield then assisted the applicator in getting the application completed off-site and installed by the main contractor. This approach underscored Fireshield's commitment to delivering quality products, achieving successful outcomes, and ongoing support.

Outcome

The Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa project was the  NZIA 2022 Winner of Commercial Architecture.

A pivotal factor in the project's success was the involvement of Fireshield’s expert support and our product.

The technical and specification advice offered by Fireshield ensured the project could navigate the complexities of applying the intumescent coating effectively, maintaining the project's timeline and high standards.

The Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa now stands as a prime example of how innovative design, when coupled with high-quality, cost-effective solutions, can create stunning spaces.
